Delhi Govt Backtracks on Extended Winter Break for Schools, Makes U-Turn After Protests

New Delhi, January 7, 2024: In a major U-turn on Monday, the Delhi government withdrew its previous order extending winter break for schools. Just five hours after issuing the directive, the government faced widespread opposition from parents and school management.

Under the new order, all government and private schools will now reopen on Wednesday, January 11, 2024. The previous order instructed schools to remain closed until January 15.

The reason for the Delhi government’s U-turn is unclear, but it’s believed that the protests from parents and schools forced the government to reconsider its decision. Opponents argued that the extended break would disrupt the academic calendar and affect children’s studies.

Reasons for Protest:

Parents argued that the sudden announcement of extended holidays disrupted their vacation plans. Many had already booked holiday camps and other activities for their children.

School managements also expressed concern that the extended break would make it difficult to complete the academic calendar. They argued that exams might have to be postponed and the start of the next academic session could also be delayed.

Government’s U-Turn:

The government has not provided any official reason for changing its decision. However, it’s believed that they took the concerns of parents and schools seriously. Some reports also claim that the government received updated weather forecasts from the Meteorological Department after their announcement, indicating a potential rise in temperature in Delhi over the next few days.

Next Steps:

Schools will now reopen from Wednesday and are expected to make necessary adjustments to complete the academic calendar. The government is also likely to review the schedule for winter break for the next academic session.

The Delhi government’s U-turn has brought relief to parents and schools, but the incident also highlights the importance of consulting all stakeholders before making major decisions.
