Written on her Instagram handle, her manager wrote, “This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness.”

With so many conversations taking place around this particular Cancer, it’s important to speak about it and know ways to prevent it.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that primarily affects women, specifically the cervix—the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It arises from abnormal changes in the cells lining the cervix. Because the cervix is a female reproductive organ, cervical cancer is exclusive to individuals with a cervix, meaning it does not occur in men.

Here are key points to remember about cervical cancer in women

Risk Factors: The primary risk factor for cervical cancer is persistent infection with certain high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Other factors, such as smoking, a weakened immune system, and long-term use of birth control pills, may also contribute to the risk.

Prevention: Regular screenings, such as Pap tests and HPV tests, are crucial for the early detection of cervical abnormalities and cancer. The HPV vaccine is also an effective preventive measure, protecting against the most common high-risk HPV strains.

Symptoms: Cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, and changes in bowel or bladder habits.

Treatment: Treatment options for cervical cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these. The choice of treatment depends on the stage of the cancer, its size, and the overall health of the individual.

Regular screenings are crucial for early detection. However, as the cancer progresses, some common symptoms may arise. It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cervical cancer. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis.
